42 second movie review: 2012

2012 is another in a long line of ‘end of the world’ blockbusters. This one comes from Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, Stargate) so I had high hopes. Being a complete John Cusack fan-boy, I was giddy with excitement for this movie to come out. In the end, the best I can offer it is a ‘meh.’ The effects are over the top spectacular, and nothing less than you would expect from ILM, but the story was stilted and awkward, and most of the acting felt like ‘let’s get this over with.’ Not including the special effects, the only high points I can call out are Chiwetel Ejiofor doing a respectable job as an American Geologist with a respectably accurate American accent, Woody Harrelson doing a completely believable job as a prophet of doom, and yes, the requisite dog escaping certain death scene was included. Oliver Platt played the ‘it’s my job to be hated’ government leader pretty well, but that’s not a tough role to sell for anybody.

If you like BIG SPECIAL EFFECTS!!! you’ll probably want to add this to your collection, but I’m really glad we opted to Redbox this first.
