This is the slowest paced Guy Ritchie film I have ever seen. That doesn’t mean it’s boring, just more methodical than his usual hyperkinetic ADD kid on Pixie Sticks style of directing. Robert Downey Jr. knocks another one out of the park with his gritty portrayal of Holmes as a man tortured by his genius. Boozing and brawling to cope with his boredom, this is definitely not your grandfather’s Sherlock. Jude Law was perfectly cast as Dr. Watson. The chemistry between Downey and Law is amazing bringing a richness to the film far beyond its slick production and special effects. Mark Strong steals every scene, again (don’t believe me? see Body of Lies), and Rachel McAdams is very easy on the eyes in all those lovely period piece costumes. The film overall has great acting, good action pieces and fantastic characters. It might be a touch slow at times, but is well worth it, making you itch for the sequel they setup so smoothly.
