The Men Who Stare At Goats

Inside jokes abound in this off-the-wall comedy about a reporter who runs into a former member of a secret army unit called the New Earth Army, who specialise in psychic warfare. The reporter, played by Ewan McGregor, and the Psychic warrior, played by George Clooney, join forces through a series of cosmic interventions, and find themselves trying to infiltrate Iraq shortly after the US invasion. They have a series of misadventures as they try to reach their destination, a secret mission known only to Clooney’s character.

Flashbacks and stories of the New Earth Army’s early years are scattered throughout their travails, showing the evolution of the unit from peace and love through corporate special interests. Jeff Bridges’ character will remind you of "The Dude," Kevin Spacey is a quirky evil genius, and Robert Patrick makes a cameo appearance as…Robert Patrick. I wish I could get typecast in the kind of roles he always plays…no one since The Duke ever fit a character-type quite so well. Stephen Root (one of my favourite comedy actors) plays a fairly vanilla role, but it is still a delight to see him in a movie.

We got this one from Redbox too, but I plan on adding it to our permanent collection soon. Close your browser now if you want to hold me to 42 seconds, or check out the trailer below if I have tweaked your interest.
