Dear Ms. Meyer,
Our daughter’s birthday was just the other day, and it being her special day after all, we asked her what she’d like to do. Of all the various options available for her to choose from, she opted to watch the movie "Twilight" for what must have been the 100th time. Being her birthday, we could not bring ourselves to tell her to go upstairs to watch it in her room…we were stuck watching it with her.
While I had not previously read your works, I have made jokes at their expense. I jumped on the band-wagon of bashing on Twilight, and the various ‘teams" that are out there, along with so many others. I tried to give the CW’s "The Vampire Diaries" a chance, simply because they scheduled it with "Supernatural." After watching only the first half of the first episode, I changed the channel convinced that it was a "Twilight" for TV, and just as convinced that it was not for me.
But after watching not only "Twilight" but also "New Moon" (after the experience of the first, she convinced us to sit for a double-feature,) I have to say…they’re not bad at all! I’m sure the movies took a light treatment approach to your books, much the way the Harry Potter movies have only hit the high-lights of their corresponding books, but that treatment actually proved to create an entertaining and enjoyable movie. I expect that the books will prove to be even better.
Yes, I had to get past the teen angst, and try not to do the requisite math to compute the age differences between the two principal characters, and if offered the choice between watching "Twilight" or "Blade" I have to tell you Wesley Snipes would win nine times out of ten, but I’d be lying if I didn’t acknowledge that I am looking forward to the next movie, and will probably read at least the first couple of books after I finish book 12 of Wheel of Time, and book 12 of the Dresden Files. I’m a fan of the supernatural genre, and you’ve created a unique mythos around both vampires and werewolves that was entertaining and fresh. Well played, Ms. Meyer, well played indeed.
I find myself now in the position of needing to offer to you an apology. I’m sorry. I enjoyed the movies based on your books, and I won’t be surprised if I find myself liking the books too. I will not retroactively change my earlier posts/comments, but I won’t repeat the sins of my past either. I hope you can understand.
Regards,
Ed
Following the above admission, I now also find myself at risk of having to surrender my man card.
I’ll drop it off after work tomorrow if required, but in my defense, I offer the following. While not credited (forgot to pay my SAG dues) I was the "voiceover talent" in this scene. NSF good taste, amplified speakers…but I have to shift the balance somehow, and my insurance carrier still isn’t ready to let me use power tools again.
