One of the many great things that comes with Windows 7 is an image burning application that can burn ISO and IMG files. The blogosphere is
full of posts about this wonderful tool called Windows Disc Image Burner, and I am not trying to duplicate that here.
What I am trying to do is tell you what to do when you cannot find that; when right-clicking an ISO doesn’t bring up that menu option, when you can’t find a thing in the menu, or with search. Since that’s the situation I found myself in this evening, and I spent significant time trying to find the answer, before I resorted to a hard target search of the Windows directory. It seems that the association for ISO and IMG files is overwritten when you install any other software (like Virtual Clone Drive) and to me anyway, it isn’t really obvious how to get it back.
The secret sauce is located in the c:\windows\system32\ and is called isoburn.exe. Invoking it from the cmd-line or the run dialog gets you this simple dialog box.As you can see, there are not a lot of switches.

So you can start burning to media and you can use the graphical interface if you use /Q switch, which is nice so you can see progress.
But if you lost the right-click context menu and want to get it back, right-click an ISO file, choose ‘open with,’ browse to and select the isoburn.exe executable. Click the check box to ‘always open with’ and bob’s your uncle, it’s back!
