I know the title is a mouthful, but the monumental pain in the ass that is Blackberry Messenger makes it worthy of its own post. To give you the background on this particular issue, I recently upgraded my Blackberry Tour to the latest OS 5.0 (from 4.7). The upgrade went smoothly over the wireless network and other than taking a bit of time had no drawbacks. With what I can see from my limited testing, the performance is snappier, the look of the OS is a little slicker and having Skype integrated into the Blackberry is a huge bonus.
You would think that with all the things RIM got right they were really taking a considered approach to their upgrades. Then they try to jam something down your throat in a textbook case of "we don’t care what you want, you’ll use this". The "SONY" approach (as I like to call it) doesn’t work with the modern consumer—unless you’re Apple—because we want the flexibility to use our equipment in any way we see fit, not as dictated to us by a large corporation. This is where RIM stepped in the poop hard. Let me explain.
BlackBerry Messenger
RIM’s take on instant messaging is their well known product BlackBerry Messenger. Some people love it, some people hate it and others couldn’t be bothered (I fall into the 3rd camp). Like with any application, if you don’t want it, don’t use it. You can simply uninstall the offending app and be on your way. This has been the standard course of action for quite some time. Then the upgrade to OS 5.0 rolled around.
Now RIM has FORCED you to use the BlackBerry Messenger. It automatically runs in the background (even if you "did not accept" the EULA), refuses to shut down at all AND—to add insult to injury—can no longer be deleted from the BlackBerry using the native Applications interface. So not only is it constantly running, but there’s no way to kill it through the new OS. Bravo RIM, good job! That’s exactly what every customer wants, an application consuming resources regardless if you use it.
Thank god for Google because I would have chucked this damn BlackBerry out the window if it hadn’t shown me how to remove the disease. Since what I found were forum posts and other odd bits, I’ll compile the steps here for your viewing pleasure.
How To Rip It Out
First you install BlackBerry App World. Yes, I know this is counterintuitive to everything you know about removing an application. The last time I had to install an app to remove an app is when it was spyware. Hmmm… makes you wonder. If you already have BlackBerry App World installed then you’re ahead of the game.
Next, open BlackBerry App World. Scroll over to the magnifying glass icon and select it. This takes you to the search box. In another burst of genius by RIM, if you were to type in Blackberry Messenger it would NOT bring up that app. Instead you have to type in Messenger to get it listed.
Once you see it, scroll down to the app and click it. This should take you to another screen where you can install the app. Select YES when the OS asks you if you want to replace the current version. Go through the normal install process which will involve a reboot of the entire phone.
When your phone comes back up go to the Applications menu (Options—>Applications). Select the Add-On portion from the drop down and you’ll now see the Messenger app. Highlight Messenger, click, and then select DELETE. You’ll go through the normal deletion process (which involves another reboot) and you’re done. Not the most elegant of solutions, but the only one currently available.
For People Who Like Numbered Lists
Here are the same instructions for the anal retentive:
- Install BlackBerry App World (if you don’t have it already)
- Open BlackBerry App World
- Select and click the magnifying glass icon
- Type in MESSENGER
- Select and click BlackBerry Messenger
- Click INSTALL
- Select YES to replacing the current version
- Reboot the phone when prompted
- Go to the Applications menu (Options—>Applications)
- Select Add-On from the drop down list
- Select and click BlackBerry Messenger
- Click DELETE
- Reboot the phone when prompted
Since this post is all about doing things how we want to, I thought the following video would be wonderfully appropriate.

Too bad this doesn’t work for all blackberry’s.
Thank you so much for this instruction! RIM keeps on kicking itself out of the business.
One more reason why my next phone will be an Android.
Be VERY careful about your data usage with the Android. It will update daily to the tune of 50MB+
REALLY? Is that some clever plot to generate gross profits from folks who exceed their bandwidth? I don’t have a droid, and haven’t heard this anywhere else.
It seems that RIM “fixed” even this solution. I can download anything in Blackberry App World – except the BB Messenger. Greatly annoying, especially because it is a huge waste of memory and battery life.
@Klutch & @Kolja – Around the time I wrote this article I was able to use the fix on my Blackberry Tour with Verizon.
It’s a shame that RIM is pulling bonehead moves and making other phones that much more appealing. Once the Android phones start catching fire and the iPhone leaves AT&T, RIM is in for a load of trouble.
Many thanks for the tip: I didn’t get that behaviour on the recent official Wind Hellas (some Greek carrier) 5.0.0.509 release for my Bold 9000, but I did on the leaked 5.0.0.610.
For those of us without a cheap data plan, there is also an alternative to the App World approach. Use the Hotspot Browser over WiFi to do an OTA install from blackberry.com/messenger, reboot, delete as described in your post, reboot again.
I agree completely with your irritation. My device, my choices.
I’m afraid we’ve cried victory too soon: the AutoUpdate feature of the Desktop Manager insists on reinstalling the “missing” component when wanting to add applications. However, I discovered a more elegant and permanent solution.
Exit Desktop Manager, then open C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\\BlackBerry.alx with NotePad or an XML editor, and search for ”. Below that branch, you’ll find a short list of descriptions for “BlackBerry Messenger”, each with their own language ID.
At the bottom of that list, you’ll find ‘true’. Just change ‘true’ to ‘false’, save the file, and restart Desktop Manager.
Et voila: BlackBerry Messenger can be deselected/uninstalled just like before, saving you aggravation and more than 3 MB of application memory.
Hi, I just happened upon this solution (Thank you!) and even prior to re-syncing, I am investigating this solution and I find that my directory only goes as far as: “C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared” and in that directory, there is only an “Applications” folder, but not ‘Loader Files’ etc etc. I even went into “Folder Options” and ticked the “show hidden files” option, but it didn’t help.
Truth be told, even if I did find these files, I don’t quite understand these directions anyway (my fault, not yours).
Help?
Thanks.
Apologies for the crippled post above: WP seems so strip XML tags from comments, and I was too hasty to click the Preview button.
What you need to search for first is an XML tag with ‘net.rim.java.blackberrymessenger’ in it, and the thing to change is enclosed inbetween ‘required’ tags. Have fun.
Sweetness! Success! I followed the download/install/delete instructions and was able to get that darn app off my Tour. Thanx for the help.
Sweet! I hate BB Messenger.
hell yeah
You da MAN! I googled it and found this. Thanks!
tried this method with the alx file and did not work. was able to find the true to change to false just fine but in DM it still is grayed out and says required. FML
Nomeus, BB Desktop Manager may not be running when you change the XML in the file. You must also reboot after the change is made. I can only suppose the same trick will still work under DM 6.0, but you might need to redo the trick after upgrading DM. I can’t test this, because the wife seized my Berry and I’m stuck with something else now.
tried it….same situation. reboot computer and/or phone?
DM 6.0.0.40
Yippee. I used your XML trick and BB Messenger is GONE GONE. Thank you.
Dracster, thanks again for the alternate removal method. RIM pulling crap like this is why Android is looking more and more appealing with each passing day.
Thanks to Gabriel foor helping me get rid of BBM, and to Dracster for keeping it off during syncs to come
I wonder if you can use this method to delete Visual Voice Mail? But I was able to remove BBM! Thanks
finally it worked
yaaaay
but how can i add it again
Omg!!! Thanks so much! Searched forever, tried google once more and found your solution! It worked like a charm! BBM is gone! Yay! Lol Ty again
All gone! Thank you so much. I bet that it will improve my battery life since it won’t be running in the background anymore
@loic http://retrohack.com/how-to-delete-blackberry-messenger-from-blackberry-os-5-0/ try the DM changes or the install then delete method
@Cyr1us Je sais pas mais ça a l'air d'être compliqué à désinstaller ! http://bit.ly/9GfNXo
thanks, search on google and came to retrohack. was having the worse time deleting this annoying program. RIM is becoming very annoying with forcing apps and programs on us. but you are awesome for posting this.
big fan of this blog now!
Glad we could help! It’s always nice to read that we helped someone out.
Thanks you for that little flash back to the Chairman of The Board. I needed that!
Thank you so much!! i have been trying to get rid of it for quiet some time now, that was a big help!
Hi, did tried, but i cant,
the BB messenger is located in core application’s list…..
how to delete it?
That worked all right and did the job but…
I lost a theme that I had bought. It was not available after the reboot. Then I figured I would get it back from Blackberry Desktop manager, but I did not find it there… moreover, I realize now that whenever I want to use the manager to manage the apps on my BB, Blackberry Messenger will be the first installed, without my being able to stop it. It’s greyed and untouchable!!!
Arghhhhh!
That means I will have to manage my apps individually using the BB, and not the Desktop Manager.
What about regular updates that will be automatically done or proposed to me on my phone? If I accept them, I guess every time Blackberry Messenger will come with the lot, since it is considered a core app.
Any idea on this?
@XXXpage it seems deleting bbm is not that easy. maybe this works for you: http://bit.ly/hkraFp
Thank You Sooo much, I HATE BB Messenger!!!
Thank you for this walk through. Now if I can get rid of PTT!
I have googled and found this, thanks. What is the point of BB Messenger anyway?? There are lots of other IM popular software…
Well it has to be one of the following…
1) to annoy folks to no end
2) to increase sales of extended batteries
3) to provide an encrypted IM application that no one can actually use, since it is too subtle to notice, threads for crap, and you will go both blind and crazy trying to use the keyboard to respond to any message you actually get.
Glad it worked out for you.
Merry Christmas,
Ed
Thanks! Thou art surely the Man!
Also… my BB *never* touches my computer. Ever.
Like introducing your wife to your girlfriend. Bad idea.

really thank you, you saved my battery!
Thx so much for this!!!!! I wanted to erase BB Messenger since always… i only use to use it to read barcodes lol…
Thanks worked like a dream
thanks a ton! i was going nuts trying to figure out how to get rid of it!
I found a much easier way to delete BBM. I too don’t care much for it and don’t have any friends with a BB who I could talk to on the messenger. So the way I found to delete it was: First go to settings icon (looks like a wrench). Second, click applications. After they finish loading, you should see a pull down menu in the top- right corner. The list is automatically set to third party. Third, change the pull down to say Add-Ons. Fourth, click on Blackberry Messenger on the list. Fifth, click delete. Sixth, your phone should then ask you to reboot; Click Yes. It’s done. You are free from BBM. And free to download it again, if you would ever want it back. Thanks!! -Samantha <3
Thanks Samantha,
This worked perfectly!
Works, Thanks Gabriel.
Thank you! I’ve searched EVERYWHERE for this! I have a BB Torch, so it was slightly different than your steps, but I got the basic idea, and it worked. Again, thanks so much!!!
Hi LeeAnne,
Can you let us know what was different, in case others with a Torch get jammed up?
Thank you!
Ed
Thank you soo soo much!
OMG, thank you so much! This worked! And I loved your list for the anal retentive (described me perfectly). Thank you!
Thank you!! This app was taking up too much precious space, & every other site said it couldn’t be deleted. So glad I found your post!!
Messnger was driving me mad !!
THANKS for this post – worked a treat…..
I shot the messenger !!
Worked like a charm on my Curve 8900 /BB OS 5
This procedure worked great on my Blackberry bold 9700
This procedure worked great on my Blackberry bold 9700
Just tried this with the current release of App World and instead of giving you the option immediately to install it prompts you to “Sign in” to BB Messenger.
AKA – they’ve made it impossible to uninstall without signing up for more of the BB crap.
Grr….
Attempting the DM method of uninstallation and see how that goes.
The original method just worked for me on a BlackBerry Bold 9000 with OS 5.0.0.1067.
Thanks! Hopefully not having BBM will also keep me from having to do a battery pull EVERY DAY to free up memory on my Tour.
Just wanted to say thank you! Man the bb messenger was tickin me off. I never used it and with it runnin all the time it was wearin my battery down quick! Thanks again!
