Of course, once you have ISA installed, you have a brick as far as a “functional computer” is concerned, until you set things up correctly. Don’t think of this as a Windows server anymore; it is a firewall. And what is the default posture of a firewall? Beuller? Beuller? Anyone? DENY ALL
You have to get basic connectivity set up once ISA is installed. At first, you will not even be able to RDP in to the server unless you are connected using RDP when you install ISA, so make sure you have console access!
- Launch ISA console
- Access Firewall Policy
- Toolbox
- Network Objects, Remote Management Computers
- Add the workstation(s) that need to remotely manage the isa server. This includes icmp and rdp.
- Tasks
- Show System Policies
- System Rule 10, Allow DHCP replies…add the External interface if necessary
- Enable System rule 19 to permit web surfing FROM the ISA server. Access to Windows Update and other Microsoft sites is already permitted, but you will want to download stuff, so you need to be able to access the web.
