Running Diablo II LOD on Windows 7

Those of you who know me know that I am not a big gamer. I have yet to complete Diablo II LOD, even though I have owned it since 2003, and have installed it countless times on various machines. Well, once again I found myself wanting to install it, this time on my Acer Aspire One running Windows 7 Ultimate. Believe it or not, it works! Here is what you have to do.

  1. Install Diablo II as you normally would. I chose to run setup.exe as an administrator. During video testing, I chose D2D.
  2. Install the Expansion pack, again I chose to run as an administrator.
  3. Download and install the 1.12 patch from here. Interestingly, I could not d/l from Blizzard or any mirror using http; they were all ‘too busy’ or had too many connections, but I followed the path using cmd-line ftp and got it right away…retro!
  4. Once installed, right-click the shortcut, and do the following:
set the option to run as an administrator
set the option to run in XP SP3 compatibility
edit the shortcut to run in window mode "C:\Program Files\Diablo II\Diablo II.exe" –window

After that, bob’s your uncle and there you go. I hope this helps someone else who loves using a  cutting edge o/s and playing an old school game.

I find myself always installing LucasArts games on all my machines. If it weren’t for ScummVM I’d be a very sad boy.

One of my favorite guilty pleasures is an old Sierra game called “Jones in the Fast Lane”. I spent COUNTLESS hours playing this game in my middle school computer class. We even had heated competitions over it. If you’ve never checked it out, here’s a flash port – http://home.broadpark.no/~kboye/jones/jones.html

Thank god for nerds with too much time on their hands =)
