In setting up your Exchange 2010 infrastructure, and more specifically, communications between your edge transport and your hub transport servers, you’d think that EdgeSync would provide you with a little more detail that something is not quite right. Of course, I suppose if it did I would not have something to post about, so call this article my own little silver lining.
In setting up incoming mail, the Edge Transport server accepts email for the internal user, but is unable to transfer it to the internal Hub Transport server. Checking the queue, you find the email held, with the following error.
Exchange 2010 451 4.4.0 Primary target IP address responded with: "451 5.7.3 Cannot achieve Exchange Server authentication."
Here is one common cause of this issue, and how to fix it.
Complaint
Problem between Edge Transport and Hub Transport servers. No incoming mail flow into the Hub. All Internet email is held at the Edge.
Diagnosis
Log onto the Edge Transport Server. Launch EMC. Click on Toolbox. Click on Queue Viewer. In the Actions pane, click Open Tool…
Click on messages tab. Highlight a message and check last error. Observe this message
451 4.4.0 Primary target IP address responded with: "451 5.7.3 Cannot achieve Exchange Server authentication."
Resolution
Make sure that Exchange Authentication is enabled, and that in the receive connector, you configure the connector to identify itself in response to HELO or EHLO using either the internal FQDN or NetBIOS name.
- Server Configuration
- Hub Transport
- Receive Connectors

- Ensure that Exchange Server authentication is enabled.

- Rinse and repeat if necessary.
Speaking of failures to communicate, this phrase from 1967′s Cool Hand Luke is ranked #11 on the AFI’s 100 Years…100 Movies Quotes. The warden’s sound bite is the one everybody uses, but if you watch the film, I think you’ll agree that when Luke throws it back in the warden’s face, it is much more powerful. Since I couldn’t find the movie online for streaming, enjoy this Guns N’ Roses classic.
